This website is designed for you to reinforce your organizational and time management skills. You are still, however, accountable for copying down the daily assignments during class and for submitting your work in a timely fashion. Please do not rely solely on this website, as not all class materials will be published to this site. As long as we are in school full time, all assignments, tests, and quizzes will be posted on the white board in class.
In this class, you will learn how to apply scientific, engineering and math practices to your everyday life. The scientific method is one approach to solving problems in the world around you. You will learn how to use the scientific method as well as other methods for solving problems. Most importantly, you will learn how to come up with good questions, and develop models to explain phenomena inside and outside the classroom. A phenomenon is an event or occurrence that stirs your curiosity to investigate why it happens. You will learn how to gather data through investigation, reading, and observation. You will then come up with explanations through reasoning and last communicate your explanations with your classmates.
To keep track of your daily homework assignments and quiz/test dates, please refer to Google Classroom. Hard copies of notes will be available for students to pick up from the NOTES file on my desk or a digital copy will be available on Google Classroom. As this class involves a lot of hands-on activities, there will not be written notes everyday.

Did You Know?
The picture above is of a series of volcanic islands found in the Pacific Ocean where a famous scientist did field studies and scientific research leading to his theory of evolution by natural selection. Can you identify the name of these islands and the scientist that became famous because of the data he collected there?
Extra Credit Opportunity!
Were you aware of the scientific richness of Long Island? Do you want to earn 10 points while being outside and having fun? Ask mom and dad if they will take you on a family field trip to either the Cold Spring Harbor DNA Learning Center or the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery. To get the 10 points, you must go to the Fish Hatchery and bring back your receipt attached to a 5 sentence or more summary about your experience there.
